語源
『canton』はフランス語の『canton』に由来し、最終的にはイタリア語の『cantone』から借用された。語根の'cant-'は「隅・角」を指していた。
『canton』はイタリア語の『cantone』からフランス語の『canton』へ変化し、やがて英語に取り入れられた。意味は『隅』から領域の区画を指すように変わった。
当初は「隅（かど）」を意味していたが、時間とともに「行政区・区画（特にスイスの州）」という現在の意味に発展した。
