語源
「camphor」はアラビア語の「kafūr」に由来し、さらに語源はサンスクリット語の「karpūra」に遡る。
サンスクリット語の「karpūra」→アラビア語の「kafūr」→中世ラテン語の「camphora」→古フランス語の「camphre」を経て、現代英語の「camphor」になった。
当初は「特定の樹木から得られる芳香性の揮発性物質」を指し、時間を経てもこの基本的意味は大きく変わっていない（合成カンフルや製剤にも適用されるようになった）。
