語源
「calma」は後期ラテン語の『cauma』に由来し、さらに古代ギリシャ語の『καῦμα（熱、灼熱）』にさかのぼる。ロマンス語で意味が変化し、海の凪（風のない状態）を表すようになった。
『cauma』はギリシャ語『καῦμα』から来て、中世のロマンス語の変化を経てスペイン語・イタリア語の『calma』になり、意味は凪や静けさに定着した。
当初は「熱」や「気絶（熱さに関連する状態）」に関する語だったが、ロマンス語では次第に「凪」や「静けさ」を意味するようになった。
