語源
『branched-chain』は過去分詞の『branched』（動詞『branch』から）と名詞『chain』から成る現代の複合語である。『branch』は古フランス語の『branche』（後期ラテン語の『branca』＝『爪（または枝）』に由来）に起源があり、『chain』はラテン語の『catena』に由来する古フランス語の『chaine』に由来する。
『branched-chain』は英語で技術的・科学的文章において19〜20世紀に用いられた二語の表現『branched chain』から発展し、形容詞的に用いる際に『branched-chain』とハイフンで結ばれることが一般的になった。
当初は単に「枝分かれした鎖」を意味する文字通りの表現だったが、化学・生化学で側鎖を持つ分子を指す専門用語としての意味が強くなった。
