「bodyguard」は現代英語で「body（身体）」と「guard（護る）」の複合語に由来し、「guard」は古フランス語'garder'（守る）から来ている。
「bodyguard」は16～17世紀ごろの近代英語で「body」と「guard」を結び付けて作られ、個人の護衛を意味する語として定着していった。
当初は文字どおり「身体を守る者」を意味したが、時代を経て個人の護衛を担う組織的な警備や比喩的な「守り手」などにも用いられるようになった。
