語源
「blastosphere」はギリシャ語の「blastos」と「sphaira」から派生し、「blastos」は「胚芽・芽」「sphaira」は「球」を意味する。
「blastosphere」は近代の生物学文献でギリシャ語要素を合成して生まれ、20世紀〜21世紀にかけて胚や未分化細胞の球状集合体を指す専門用語として用いられるようになった。
元々は「芽の球」という文字通りの意味だったが、現在では発生学や培養実験で用いられる「胚・未分化細胞の球状集合体」という専門的な意味に変化した。
