語源
「black-box」は英語に由来し、特に『black』と『box』の語から成る。『black』は古英語の『blæc』に由来し「暗い・焼けた」を意味し、『box』は古英語（ラテン語『buxus』より）に由来し「入れ物・箱」を意味した。
当初は文字通り「黒い箱」を意味していたが、20世紀初頭の工学・電子工学分野で内部構造を調べない（扱わない）部品を指す用法になり、20世紀中頃には航空機のフライトレコーダーの呼称として用いられ、その後コンピュータや一般比喩として広がった。
最初は文字通りの「黒い箱」を指したが、次第に「内部が隠されている・不明なシステム」を表す技術的・比喩的な意味へと変化し、航空機のフライトレコーダーという専門的な意味も持つようになった。
