『barnstorm』は20世紀初頭のアメリカ英語に由来し、『barn』は農場の納屋、『storm』は注目を集めるために突進するという比喩的意味を組み合わせた語である。
『barnstorm』は『barn』＋『storm』の複合語として発展し、納屋や地方会場で見世物を行う興行師を指す語として用いられるようになった。1910〜1920年代には巡業興行や曲芸飛行を指す語として一般的になった。
