「barnstorm」は英語に由来し、「barn（納屋）」と「storm（急襲する）」を組み合わせて作られた語である。
この語は19世紀末から20世紀初頭の米語で、納屋や仮設会場で上演する巡業団を指す言葉として現れた。1910年代には飛行士が町を巡って飛行スタントを見せることにも使われ、のちに精力的な選挙遊説などにも拡張された。
当初は「納屋で上演する」「農村の会場に押し入る」の意だったが、次第に「精力的に巡業する」「派手で観客受けのする興行」を意味するようになった。
