語源
「barbula」はラテン語に由来し、もともと「barba（ひげ）」と指小辞の「-ula（小さい）」から成る「小さなひげ」を意味した語です。
古典ラテン語・中世ラテン語で「小さなひげ」を意味していた「barbula」は、後に学術ラテン語および英語の専門語として（コケの属名など）取り入れられました。
当初は「小さなひげ」を意味しましたが、現在では学名（属名）や解剖学・昆虫学でのひげ状構造の記述に使われることが多くなっています。
