語源
「barbette」はフランス語の語『barbette』（『barbe』の小形）に由来し、『barbe』は「あごひげ」を意味した。
『barbette』はフランス語から英語に入ってきて、もともとは小さなあごひも・頭飾りを指した語であり、その後陸軍・海軍の用語としてかさ上げされた砲台や装甲筒を指すようになった。
当初は「小さなあごひも（布）」を意味したが、時代とともに「砲のためのかさ上げされた台・装甲されたマウント」を意味するように変化した。
