「barbasco」はスペイン語に由来し、スペイン語圏で用いられる植物の民間名である。
19世紀から20世紀初頭にかけて、探検家や植物学者、商人が現地名としてスペイン語の'b arbasco'を英語に取り入れた。英語ではロテノンを含む根やメキシコのヤマイモの双方を指すようになった。
