語源
「baptistery」はラテン語後期の語『baptisterium』に由来し、語根のギリシャ語'baptiz-'（'baptizein'）は「浸す、浸礼する」を意味した。
『baptisterium』は古フランス語の『baptistere』のような形を経て中英語の『baptisterie』になり、最終的に現代英語の『baptistery』となった。
当初は「洗礼のための場所（浸礼用の池や建物）」を指したが、次第に「洗礼盤を含む教会の区画や別棟」を指す意味に広がり、場合によっては洗礼盤そのものを指すこともある。
