語源
「banksman」は英語に由来し、'bank'＋'man'から成る。'bank'は（古ノルド語'banki'由来で）岸・盛り上がり・波止場を指し、'man'は『人』を意味した。
中英語の 'bankesman' のような形で現れ、波止場や岸で働く人を指した。後に海事・埠頭の文脈で使われ、さらにクレーンや車両の合図を行う役割にも用いられるようになった。
当初は『岸・波止場で働く人（荷役に関わる者）』を意味したが、次第に『車両やクレーンの動きを誘導・合図する人』という現在の意味に移った。
