語源
「bankrupt」はイタリア語の「bancarotta」（以前の形は「banca rotta」）に由来し、'banca'は「ベンチ（取引台）」、'rotta'は「壊れた」を意味した。
イタリア語の「bancarotta／banca rotta」から中期フランス語の「banqueroute」、中英語の「bankrout」のような形を経て、現代英語の「bankrupt」になった。
元々は「壊れたベンチ」を指し（金融業者の台を壊す慣習に由来）、時を経て「金銭的に破綻した」という現在の意味に発展した。
