語源
'ballottement' はフランス語の 'ballotter' に由来し、'投げる・揺すぶる' の意を持つ。
英語には現代フランス語の 'ballottement' を経て入り、古フランス語 'balloter' や俗ラテン語 *ballottare（頻用形）に由来し、最終的にはラテン語/イタリア語の 'ballare'（踊る・揺らす）と関連する。
当初は一般に「揺さぶる・投げる」意味だったが、医学用語では診察で触知される特有の反跳・揺れを指すようになった。
