語源
「ballade」は古フランス語の「ballade」から来ており、最終的にはイタリア語の「ballata」（ラテン語の「ballare」由来）にさかのぼる。『ballare』は「踊る」を意味した。
「ballata」から古フランス語の「ballade」に変化し、さらに中英語に取り入れられて現代英語の「ballade」になった。
当初は「踊りのための歌」を意味していたが、次第に定型詩を指す文学用語となり、音楽では物語的・叙情的な器楽曲を指すようになった。
