語源
「balilla」はジェノヴァ方言（リグーリア語）の語で、もともと『小さな少年』『小さないたずらっ子』を意味した。
「balilla」は18世紀のジェノヴァで少年（ジョヴァンニ・バッティスタ・ペラッソ）のあだ名として使われ、その後愛国的象徴となり、20世紀にはファシストの青少年組織オペラ・ナツィオナーレ・バリッラやフィアット508バリッラの車名として採用された。
元は『小さな少年』という個人的なあだ名だったが、時代を経てファシスト期の青少年団体の構成員や自動車モデルを指す語へと意味が広がった。
