語源
「balangay」はオーストロネシア語族に由来し、再構成された原形 *balangay/*balanga は『船』や大きな水上船を指したと考えられる。
プロト・マラヨ・ポリネシア語→古マレー語などを経てフィリピン諸語に入り、歴史資料に現れ、現代でも『balangay』として残っている（『balangai』などの表記も見られる）。
当初は海上を行く板張りの船を指し、その後も同様の意味を保ち、考古資料や博物館資料としての用法も確立した。
