語源
『bainite』はアメリカの冶金学者エドガー・C・ベイン（Bain）の名前に由来し、接尾辞『-ite』は鉱物や鉱物様相に用いられる。
『bainite』は20世紀初頭にベインらが観察・記述した組織を指す語として作られ、固有名『Bain』と接尾辞『-ite』を組み合わせて現代語となった。
当初はベインが報告した相を指す名称だったが、現在では鋼や類似合金におけるその特定の微細組織を示す冶金学上の標準用語になった。
