語源
「baggageman」は英語起源で、「baggage」＋「man」の複合語で「荷物を扱う人」を意味する。
「baggage」は古ノルマン・フランス語の'bagage'（束・袋を意味するゲルマン語由来）に由来し、「man」は古英語の'mann'（人）に由来。現代では' baggage man'／'baggage-man'の形で現れ、のちに綴りを連結して'baggageman'になった。
もともとは荷物を運んだり管理したりする職業名を指していたが、現在でも基本的な意味は同じであり、職業名としてはあまり一般的でなくなっている（porterやbaggage handlerが一般的）。
