語源
「Bagdad」は中期ペルシア語に由来し、語形は「Baghdād」で、「bag（神・主）」と「dād（与えられた）」を意味した。
「Baghdād」はアラビア語の「بغداد（Baghdād）」を経て中世ラテン語やヨーロッパ諸語に入り、「Bagdad」「Baghdad」といった綴りを経て現代英語の「Baghdad」となり、「Bagdad」は歴史的・変種の綴りとして残った。
当初は地名成分として「神から与えられた」を意味しており、やがて特定の都市（現在の「Baghdad」）を指す固有名詞となった。
