語源
『backstretch』は英語語で、『back』と『stretch』の複合語に由来する。『back』は「後部」を意味し、『stretch』は「伸びた区間・範囲」を意味した。
『backstretch』は19世紀のアメリカ英語の競馬用語として生まれた。『back』（古英語bæc）と『stretch』（古英語streccanを経た中英語）が結びつき、競馬場の後方直線区間を指す語になり、のちに観客席裏の厩舎地区を指すようになった。
当初はトラックの後方直線部分を指したが、時間とともに転義し、厩舎やそこで働く人々を指すようになった。
