語源
'backstretch'は英語で'back'＋'stretch'の複合語。'back'は古英語の'bæc'（後ろ、背後）に由来し、'stretch'は古英語の'streccan'（引き伸ばす、伸ばす）に由来する。
'back'（古英語'bæc'）と'stretch'（古英語'streccan'）は別々に使われていた語だが、19世紀のアメリカの競馬用語で結合して『観客席とは反対側の直線区間』を指す複合語'backstretch'が生まれ、やがて一般語としても用いられるようになった。
当初はコースの向こう側にある物理的な『伸びた区間』を指したが、次第に活動やプロジェクトの『後半・終盤』を指す比喩的用法も生じた。
