語源
「backspin」は現代英語で「back」と「spin」を結合して作られた語で、『back』は「後ろへ（向かう）」、『spin』は「回転する」を意味する。
「back」は古英語の『bæc』（後ろ）に由来し、「spin」は古英語の『spinnan』（回転する）に由来する。『backspin』という複合語は19–20世紀にスポーツ用語として成立した。
当初は単に「後方への回転」を意味したが、次第にスポーツ分野でボールにかける特定の逆回転（着地時に止まる・戻るなど）を指す専門用語になった。
