語源
「backseat」は古英語の要素に由来し、具体的には「bæc」と「setl」の語に由来する。'bæc'は「後ろ（後部）」を意味し、'setl'は「座席・座る場所」を意味した。
「backseat」は近代英語で 'back' と 'seat' の単純な複合語として形成され、馬車や自動車の普及に伴い19世紀に一般化した。比喩的意味（「backseat driver」のような）はその後に発展した。
