語源
「backfill」は英語に由来し、具体的には「back」（古英語'bæc'）と「fill」（古英語'fyllan'）の結合であり、'bæc'は「後ろ・戻る」、'fyllan'は「満たす・埋める」を意味した。
「backfill」は現代英語で『back-fill』という複合語として技術・建設分野で使われるようになり（19〜20世紀）、最終的に現在の単語『backfill』になった。
当初は主に『掘削箇所に土などを埋め戻す』を意味していたが、時間とともに比喩的に『欠員を補充する・役割を埋める』という意味にも広がった。
