語源
「backdate」は英語で『back』＋名詞『date』から作られた語。『date』はラテン語『datum』が古フランス語『date』を経て入った語で、『back』は元々「後ろ・過去の時点」を意味した。
『date』はラテン語『datum』（「与えられたもの」）から古フランス語『date』を経て英語に入った。『back』は古英語『bæc』に由来する。近代英語でこれらが結合して『backdate』が生まれた。
もともとは単純な語の結合だったが、やがて「文書などに意図的に過去の日付を付ける」という特定の意味を持つようになった。
