語源
「backcast」は近代英語の合成語で、『back』＋『cast』から成り、気象学や統計学などの専門分野で『forecast』『hindcast』にならって作られた語である。
『back』は古英語の'bæc'（背・後ろ）に由来し、『cast』は最終的に古ノルド語の'kasta'／古英語の'cæstan'（投げる）に由来する。'backcast'という複合語は20世紀にモデル化の専門語として登場した。
当初は「予報モデルを過去のデータに適用すること（過去への投影）」という意味だったが、次第に過去の条件をモデルで推定するより広い意味で使われるようになった。
