語源
「babirousa」はマレー語／インドネシア語の語句「babi rusa」に由来し、「babi」は「豚」、「rusa」は「鹿」を意味した。
「babi rusa」は現地語で用いられ、その後17〜19世紀の欧州の博物学者たちの記述（オランダ語・英語）に導入され、「babirusa」「babirousa」などの表記を経て英語の普通名になった。
元来は「豚と鹿」の合成語のような字義（豚のようで鹿のようなもの）を指したが、次第にスラウェシなどに生息する特定の動物（種群）の名として定着した。
