「azulene」はスペイン語の「azul」（青）に由来し、非飽和炭化水素を示す化学接尾辞「-ene」と結合している。
19世紀に天然源（例：カモミール、グアイアック材）から青色の炭化水素が単離され、その名称としてスペイン語の「azul」と接尾辞「-ene」を合わせた「azulene」が科学文献に登場した。
