語源
「aztecan」はスペイン語の「azteca」に由来し、さらにナワトル語の「Aztēcatl」にさかのぼる。ここで「Aztlān」は伝説上の故郷を指し、「aztatl」などの語根は「サギ（heron）」に関係する（『Aztlānの人々』の意）。
「aztecan」はスペイン語の「azteca」および英語の「Aztec」から変化したもので、これらはナワトル語の「Aztēcatl」に由来する。英語では「Aztec」から派生して形容詞・名詞の派生形「aztecan」が生じた。
当初は「Aztlānの出身者」や「Aztēcatlの人」を意味していたが、時代とともに「アステカ文明・民族・文化・言語に関する」という広い意味へと発展した。
