語源
「azotous」はフランス語の「azote」から由来し、接頭辞の「a-」は「～でない」、ギリシャ語の「zōē」は「生命」を意味する（したがって「azote」は「生命を支えない」を意味し、窒素の古名）。
「azotous」はフランス語の「azote」（あるいは科学ラテン語の「azotum」）に英語の形容詞接尾辞「-ous」を付けて形成され、化学用語として用いられるようになった。
もともとは気体・元素としての窒素を指した（文字通り「生命を支えない」）が、やがて窒素に関することを示す形容詞として用いられるようになり、その意味は大きくは変わっていない（ただし現在は稀でやや古風）。
