語源
『azotise』はフランス語の『azote』（近代フランス語『azote』）に由来し、さらにギリシャ語の『azōtos』（接頭辞『a-』＝「ない」、『zōē』＝「生命」）に遡る（窒素は呼吸を助けないことに由来）。
『azotise』はフランス語・新ラテン語の『azote』に由来する語から19世紀に英語で動詞『azotize/azotise』として形成され、『azotised』『azotising』のような派生形が生まれた。
当初は『生命がないもの（窒素）』を指す語だったが、時代とともに『窒素を付加する／窒素化する』という化学・材料工学の専門的な意味になった。
