語源
'azoth'はアラビア語の語（「al-zābūq」＝「الزَّبُوق」など）に由来し、接頭辞の「al-」は定冠詞で、「zābūq」は『水銀／水銀状物質』を意味した。
'azoth'はアラビア語の『al-zābūq』から中世ラテン語の形（'azoth'や'azothus'など）を経て、近世英語の錬金術文献に取り入れられた。
当初は錬金術文献で『水銀』や『水銀状物質』を指していたが、次第に『普遍の溶媒』『万能薬』を意味するようになり、さらに比喩的に『本質・精髄』を表すようになった。
