語源
「azimuth」はアラビア語の語『as‑samt』または複数形『as‑sumūt』に由来し、『方向』や『道筋』を意味した。
『azimuth』は中世ラテン語／古スペイン語の形（例：'azimut'／'azymut'）を経てアラビア語『as‑sumūt』から入り、最終的に現代英語の『azimuth』になった。
当初は『方向』の一般的な意味だったが、時代とともに航法・測量・天文学での『水平角・方位角』という専門的意味に特化していった。
