語源
「azimuth」はアラビア語に由来し、もとの語は「as-samt」（しばしば「al-samt」と表記）で、'samt'は「方向」または「道」を意味しました。
「azimuth」は中世ラテン語や古いスペイン語・古フランス語（例: 中世ラテン語 'asimut'、古スペイン語 'acimut'、古フランス語 'azimut'）を経て中英語の 'azemuth' となり、現代英語の 'azimuth' に至りました。
