語源
「axoneme」は近代ラテン語・学術造語に由来し、ギリシャ語の要素「axōn」（軸・車軸）と、構成単位を示す接尾辞「-eme」を結合して作られた語です。
「axoneme」は科学文献で「axon-」（ギリシャ語『axōn』から）と接尾辞「-eme」を結合して作られ、19世紀後半から20世紀初頭にかけて英語の細胞生物学用語として定着しました。
当初は「軸のような糸」や「軸状繊維」を指す一般的な表現だったが、次第に繊毛や鞭毛の微小管で構成される中心構造を特定して示す語へと意味が絞られました。
