語源
「axer」は名詞「axe（ax）」から派生し、動作者を示す接尾辞「-er」を付けて「斧を使う人」という意味で生じた。
「axe」は古英語の「æx（eax）」に由来し、さらにゲルマン祖語の語根にさかのぼる。現代英語では接尾辞「-er」によって「axer」が作られ、文字どおりの用法の後に20世紀以降、比喩的に人員・予算を削減する人を指すようになった。
元来は「斧を振るう人（文字どおり）」を意味したが、時代が下ると「（人員などを）切り捨てる人（比喩）」という意味も持つようになった。
