語源
「avowry」はアングロ・フランス語の『avouerie』（または古フランス語の『avouerie』）に由来し、『avou-』の部分は宣言・認知を意味していた。
『avouerie』は古フランス語や中英語の形『avowrie』などを経て、最終的に現代英語の『avowry』（複数形『avowries』）になった。
当初は一般的な『告白・表明』を指していたが、次第に財産に関する訴訟手続きでの特定の法的弁明を指すように意味が限定された。
