語源
「avijja」はパーリ語に由来し、最終的にはサンスクリット語の「avidyā」から来ている。接頭辞の「a-」は「～でない」を、語根の「vid」は「知る」を意味した。
サンスクリット語の「avidyā」はパーリ語で「avijjā」に変化し（jの長化／二重化）、仏教研究や翻訳を通じて英語の借用語『avijja』として入った。
元々は一般的な「知らないこと」を意味していたが、仏教用語としては「苦と輪廻を生む根本的な無明」という専門的な意味へと発展した。
