語源
「average」は古フランス語の『avarie』（中世ラテン語『avaria』）に由来し、最終的にはアラビア語『ʿawār』（「欠損・損傷」）にさかのぼる。かつては特に海運における損害やそれを分担する費用を指した。
『avarie』（「損害」）や中世ラテン語の用法（分担すべき損失）から英語に入り、当初は船舶の損失を意味していたが、やがて分配・共通分の意味になり、最終的に統計上の「典型的な値（平均）」という現代的な意味に発展した。
当初は「分担すべき損害・損失」を意味していたが、時間を経て「共通の分担額」や「典型的・代表的な値（平均値）」という現在の意味に変化した。
