'auxotonic'は、ギリシャ語の『auxein』（増す・成長する）を語根とする結合形『auxo-』と、ギリシャ語 'tonos'（張力・緊張）に由来する接尾辞 '-tonic' から作られた語です。
ギリシャ語の語根『auxein』と『tonos』をもとに近代の科学用語（ネオラテン語／近代英語）として合成され、『auxotonic』が生理学文献に19世紀末から20世紀にかけて登場しました。
もともとは『張力が増すこと』を示す要素から成る語でしたが、現在は『張力と長さが同時に変化する収縮の類型』を指す専門用語として定着しました。
