語源
「auxochromous」は近代の科学用語で、ギリシャ語要素の組み合わせに由来する：『auxo-』はギリシャ語の『auxein』（増やす）を、『chroma』は『色』を意味する。
『auxochromous』は19世紀の化学文献で『auxo-』と『chroma』を結合して作られた名詞『auxochrome』を経て、英語の専門語として形容詞化した語である。
