語源
「auxetical」はギリシャ語の『auxētikos』に由来し、そこでは『auxein』が「増す・増える」を意味した。
『auxetical』はニューラテン／科学ラテン語の『auxeticus』や近代の技術用語（英語・フランス語の『auxétique』）を経て、現代英語の形『auxetical』として使われるようになった。
当初は「増大・成長に関する」を意味していたが、時間とともに材料科学の分野で「負のポアソン比を示す（引っ張ると横に膨らむ）」という特定の意味で用いられるようになった。
