語源
「autoscopy」は近代ラテン語・医学用語の形成で、ギリシャ語の要素『autos（自己）』と『skopein（見る）』から来ている。
『autoscopy』は19世紀後半から20世紀初頭にかけて医学・心理学用語として英語に入り（New Latinやフランス語の『autoscopie』を経由）、ギリシャ語の語根『autos』＋『skopein』で形成された。
当初は「自分自身を見ること」という文字通りの意味だったが、次第に「自己像を外側に見るという臨床的現象（自己像幻視）」という専門的な意味に変化した。
