語源
「autonym」はギリシャ語の単語「autonymos」（「auto-」＝「自己」、「onoma（onoma）」＝「名前」）に由来します。
「autonym」はニューラテン語/近代ラテン語（例：「autonymum」）を経て19世紀に英語に取り入れられ、『自らの名前』という意味を保ちつつ、言語学や分類学で専門的な用法が発達しました。
