「autograph」はギリシャ語の'authographos'に由来し、'auto-'は「自分自身」、'graphō'は「書く」を意味しました。
'autographos'は中世ラテン語の'autographum'、中期フランス語の'autographe'を経て中英語の'autograf'となり、最終的に現代英語の'autograph'になりました。
