語源
「autocatalysis」はギリシャ語由来で、要素「auto-」は「自己」を意味し、「katalysis」は「緩める・分解」を意味した（動詞「katalyein」＝「緩める」より）。
「autocatalysis」は近代の科学英語で接頭辞「auto-」と語「catalysis」を組み合わせて作られた語であり、「catalysis」はネオラテン語や近代ギリシャ語を経て19世紀の化学文献で英語に入った。合成語は19世紀末から20世紀初頭に化学用語として定着した。
元来は「緩める・分解」を意味したが、19世紀には「触媒による反応の促進」を意味するようになり、「autocatalysis」は後に『生成物が自らの生成を促進する反応』に特化した意味となり、さらに他分野の自己増幅的過程にも拡張された。
