'australoid'は新ラテン語的な造語で、ラテン語 'australis'（南の）に由来する接頭辞 'Austral-' と、ギリシャ語の「〜に似た」の意味を持つ接尾辞 '-oid' を組み合わせている。
'australoid' は19世紀後半の人類学文献で作られ、南方の地（特にオーストラリア）を指す 'Austral-' と「〜に似た」を意味する '-oid' を結合して『〜に似た型』を表す語として使われた。当時は 'Caucasoid' や 'Mongoloid' と並ぶ人種分類語として使われた。
